Reason-
the questions you raised are things I've thought about many times over the years. A few years ago, the art museum ran an exhibit of the photographs of a man named "Weegie" or something like that (can't recall his real name). He was a freelance photographer in the NYC area during the 20s-50s. He would listen to the police radio, then show up whenever something happened. And he photographed some very graphic, brutal crime scenes. Gangsters, murders, you name it. Drive by shootings are nothing new, they've been around as long as there have been cars.
But on the other hand...
There is more crime now than there used to be. And most disturbing, there is a lot more serious juvenile crime than there used to be. Students are getting dumber, I don't think anyone can argue that. True, the whiz kids are getting smarter, but the dumbasses are getting dummerer and dummerer, and their numbers are increasing.
It's hard to say. As for sports, most definitely downhill. Crap today that we did not have in the good old days-
- corporately named stadiums
- Wednesday night college football games
- no daytime World Series games
- too many bowls
- the Super Bowl halftime show
- too many teams in the NCAA tournament
- no hockey season at all
- NBA players entering the stands to kick ass and take names
- players who stay with their team for an average of 3 years
- the Red Sox are World Champions
SOme improvements, but mainly crap.
Reason, you make some good points. The "good old days" are so often viewed through rose colored glasses.
That said, I think the point the Dr. Williams was trying to make is that "back then" many of the same things happened, but people were mortified if a teenaged daughter turned up pregnant or a child was arrested or failed in school.
I remember watching Father Knows Best and being simultaneous bemused, horrified and envious. My father was a blue collar worker and we lived in a blue collar neighborhood. The image of a father coming home from an office with clean hands was just mind boggling. As was the idea that parents interacted with their children.
I also liked the article. But then again, I like Walter Williams.
It seems to me that we have gone too far away from the old courtesies, traditions and values. If I had a buck for every time I've held a door open for someone without any acknowledgment whatsoever, Trav and I would be living a life a luxury on a private island.
It also seems to me that while the Dems so embraced Hilary's idea that it takes a village to raise a child, few of them put it into practice.

If morals are steadily declining it begs the question why crime rates have had a recent history of declines (during a decrepit DEMOCRATIC administration) and have only recently started to rise under the ultraconservative Bush administration.
Maybe it's the "me first" attitude of the Bush administration, where it's acceptable to give extraordinarily huge tax breaks to the rich on dividend taxes - income that is not labor related and not subject to other taxes such as social security. Maybe it's the new morality of the growing gap between rich and poor and the lack of accessibility to affordable health care, even as the obscenely rich are given more breaks to get even richer. Ah yes, morality.
Yes, maybe morals are declining, but not in the way you think. Maybe it's the hateful conservative environment that says my religion or no religion.
You see, Bush and the neocons have no lockhold on morality. If anything, the recent reverse in crime rates is the result in their lack of morality.
